Here is a list of mail order sources for gingers. Please also see the list of other nurseries, some of which might offer plants by mail. The comments are my own opinions, unless otherwise noted.

NATURAL SELECTIONS EXOTICS has rapidly become one of the best places on the web to find gingers - especially the less common ones. Enid has a knack of finding unusual plants in her forays around the many wholesalers of tropical plants in South Florida. She is well known to eBayers for her quality plants and excellent service giving her a very good feedback rating. You can find her eBay listings very quickly by going to her "About Me" page. Highly recommended by GngersRus. Read the customer feedback and rating for this company at Dave's Garden Website.

Stokes Tropicals
This used to be THE PLACE for gingers, but service and availability has been eratic over the past few years. Based on customer ratings, it appears their service has improved. Their catalog is one of the most beautiful mail order catalogs in print (for any type of plant). Fellow ginger collector Maradee Cryer is mainly responsible for designing their catalog. Prices are higher than average, but selection is one of the best in the business. Naming of plants is a little confusing for us perfectionists, because the common names are not clearly distinguished from the cultivar names. The website only lists a small part of what is listed in the printed catalog. Read the customer feedback and rating for this company at Dave's Garden Website.

Plant Delights Nursery, Inc (at Juniper Level Botanic Gardens) near Raleigh, NC is perhaps the finest mail order nursery in existence. Tony Avent prides himself in offering unusual plants, and the finest quality. He has added a good selection of Hedychiums, a few Curcumas, Alpinia japonica and Costus speciosus to his catalog, and has tested them all for hardiness in his own zone 7B gardens. I am not sure why the ratings on Dave's Garden website have gone down, because I have always had very good service and quality.

I have never ordered from them but they have an excellent selection, including many gingers that are not offered anywhere else that I can find. Prices seem a little higher than average. There are some inacurracies in the way they identified plants; sometimes it was unclear whether they are listing a cultivar or a common name, and sometimes the species name is not given. I have tried to contact Andy there, but he has never returned my emails. The company has a bad reputation for sending the wrong plants and for not answering emails. PLANTATION GARDENS, James Scoggins, 112 Doris Drive, Goldsboro, NC 27534, NEW ADDRESS: 4081 Kingsley Street, Clermont, Florida 34711 E-Mail jimeds@rose.net
This grower and mail order supplier is virtually unknown, not on most of the lists and for some reason does not show up on the search engines. Nice selection of gingers, including several exclusive hybrid Hedychiums. Great pictures and descriptions on his website. Unique pricing structure, everything is $10 but you get anywhere from 1 to 6 rhizomes, depending on the selection. Ships only rhizomes and only during dormancy. I have tried to email him in the past but never got any response. He is apparently a very reliable supplier because he has a very good rating on Dave's Garden Website.

Waplants and Naga Gardens Inc., 915 Houston Texas 77018-4636, Tel 713 692 2612, owner Stephen Nowakowski, Email naga@waplants.com NOTE: not currently listing plants, but still has an active website.
Had over 35 different gingers, including several that are not offered elsewhere. They sold by mail order and were open to the public by appointment only.

Gingerwood Nursery. This website is no longer active and Tim Chapman has not been responding to emails. I have made many inquiries (and had many people ask me) but it seems the last anyone in the world of gingers has heard anything from Tim was in the fall of 2005. If anyone knows what has happened with Tim, please let me know.

On-line catalog lists a fair number of gingers at average prices. I have never ordered from them myself, and know nothing about their quality, but I have read mixed reviews from customers regarding their customer service on "Cyndi's List" of mail order suppliers. They must be the largest seed supplier in the world with 700 catalogues and 40,000 plants. I have read that they are a little slow to fill orders, but usuallly dependable and their seeds are true to species. Read the customer feedback and rating for this company at Dave's Garden Website

Glasshouse Works
There are quite a few gingers scattered through their extensive offering of exotic and unusual plants. Their prices look reasonable, but other buyers have reported poor quality, small plants, and very poor service sometimes taking several months to fill orders. Trans-Pacific Nursery, also known as World Plants, 16065 Oldsville Road, McMinnville, OR 97128, Voice: 503-472-6215, Fax: 503-434-1505, Email: groe@worldplants.com
They have a few gingers and many other exotic plants that will make great companions to gingers. Their catalog is a little difficult to search if you don't know the genus names you are looking for, but worth the effort, since they have some rare Globbas and fairly uncommon Hedychiums. I have never ordered from them but when I checked their customer reviews at Dave's Garden website, I found they have an excellent feedback record.

Charles T. DeFrance, 1409 Hontoon Road, DeLand FL 32720, Phone: (904)734-6488 , E-mail elgringo@n-jcenter.com for catalog.
A small grower with semi-tropical plants - crinum lilies, rain lilies, staghorn ferns, gingers, tropical iris, more. Charles sent me his list of a few mostly common-place gingers. Prices look reasonable, no information on quality.

Malcolm King's Harmony Gardens 5528 Aragon Av, De Leon Springs, Fl 32130 (904) 985-9677 - Malcolm has a nice selection of Hedychiums and Curcumas, including a new Curcuma cultivar 'Purple Prince'. I did not find them listed for feedback at Dave's Garden website.

"Of the 1200 ginger species in the world many nurseries have collections of ornamental gingers that have beautiful flowers. Our interest is in the 100 or so species we have found in literature that are used by people as food, spice and medicine. We have been collecting specimens from SE Asia, a centre of diversity of the ginger family, as well as the culinary & medicinal recipes from the village people where they are grown. Our collection is still modest and we’re still on a big ‘learning curve’. We are interested in acquiring new species or information on their uses and we are happy to exchange plants, information or money in return. Our complete collection numbers around 30 species currently."

Crug Farm Plants of Caernarfon, North Wales, has a very nice selection of gingers. The owners, Bleddyn and Sue, have joined Dan Hinkley of Heronswood Nursery in plant collecting expeditions, and have some unique specimens in their on-line catalog. Einion Hughes, of Rhyl, Wales informed me of this company, and also told me about the recently established Kobakoba Nursery in Somerset which carries a line of gingers.
